I was inspired by my third grade, who was also my fifth grade teacher. Her name was Dorothy Bray. She was very strict. For some reason she really liked me! There were more than thirty students in the classroom and out of all of those, she offered to tutor me. Maybe, she had heard that my father was an Army officer, who served during World War II. During that time period, my father was suffering from post-traumatic-stress-disorder. Back then, it wasn’t easy for someone to collect a pension from the VA. We nearly lost our home, since my father was not able to work. I wore handy-me-downs and the food we ate came from our neighbors. Most of our neighbors were farmers. So, they had plenty of left-over produce to share.
Well, I wanted to be like Ms. Bray. I wanted to make a difference in someone else’s life. So, I became a teacher.
